Nam Ok Hu – The Hidden Stream of Chiang Dao

“Nam Ok Hu” (literally means “water flowing out of a hole” in Northern Thai dialect) is a unique natural phenomenon found in Ban Hua Thung community, Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai.

This small wonder occurs only during the rainy season, usually for about 3–4 months each year. Fresh, crystal-clear water seeps out from the crevices between Doi Nang and Doi Luang Chiang Dao, forming a cascading stream that flows down like a multi-layered waterfall before joining as a gentle brook.

Beyond its beauty, Nam Ok Hu plays an important role in local life. The villagers rely on this water source for rice farming and agriculture, making it a lifeline that has supported the community for generations.

For visitors, this hidden gem offers not only refreshing scenery but also a nature trail where you can enjoy walking among lush forests and diverse plants. The best time to visit is during the late rainy season to early winter, when the water is at its clearest and the cool breeze makes the experience unforgettable.

How to Get There

From Ban Hua Thung village, turn left at Wat Thung Lakorn and continue straight for about 2 kilometers. The stream is located next to Atichchavangso Meditation Center.
